The Vaping Conversation Every Parent Needs to Have This Week
Vaping has become an important concern for families, and the pressure can show up long before parents realize it is part of their child’s world. Flavors, marketing, social media, and peer influence can make vaping look harmless, trendy, and normal. But parents and trusted adults can play a powerful role in helping young people make informed, healthy choices.
This week is a great time to talk. Not because something is wrong, but because prevention works best when the conversation starts before a child is faced with the pressure to try vaping.
Youth Vaping: What the Numbers Really Tell Us
Understanding the facts can help parents approach the conversation with confidence.
- Most young people are not vaping. According to the CDC, in 2024, 3.5% of middle school students and 7.8% of high school students reported current e-cigarette use.

- Vaping remains a concern among youth. The 2025 National Youth Tobacco Survey reported that 5.2% of middle and high school students currently used e-cigarettes.

These numbers remind us of two important things:
- Most young people are choosing not to vape.
- Vaping is still a real concern, and young people need the information and confidence to make healthy decisions.
Flavors such as bubble gum, glazed donut, and blue razz can make vaping products appealing to younger audiences. Some devices resemble everyday items, such as pens or USB drives, making them less recognizable to parents and teachers.
Social media and peer influence can also shape how young people view vaping. When these products appear in everyday content, they may seem more common or acceptable than they really are.
Research has also found that flavored products are widely used among young people who vape.
The Health Facts Every Parent Should Share
Kids don’t need a lecture. They need clear, age-appropriate information they can understand and remember.
1. Nicotine Can Harm the Developing Brain
The adolescent brain continues developing into young adulthood. Nicotine exposure can affect areas involved in attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. It can also lead to addiction.

2. Vaping Can Become a Difficult Habit to Break
Vaping can become part of a young person’s daily routine. The repeated hand-to-mouth motion, social settings, and nicotine cravings can reinforce the behavior and make quitting challenging.
Helping kids understand how habits develop can empower them to make healthier choices before experimentation becomes a pattern.
3. Vaping Can Affect Lung Health
E-cigarette aerosol is not simply water vapor. It can contain nicotine, fine particles, and other potentially harmful substances that users inhale into their lungs.
These exposures may irritate the respiratory system and can be especially concerning for young people whose bodies are still developing.

4. The Long-Term Effects Are Still Being Studied
Scientists continue to study the long-term health effects of vaping. However, evidence already shows that vaping is not risk-free, and nicotine addiction is a significant concern.
Young people should understand that a product can look harmless without being safe.

5. Peer Pressure Can Play a Powerful Role
Sometimes, trying a vape starts with a simple offer from a friend: “Want to try it?”
Young people may feel pressure to fit in, avoid embarrassment, or satisfy their curiosity. Practicing how to respond before that moment arrives can help them feel more prepared and confident.
6. No Tobacco Product Is Safe for Kids
Cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes all carry health risks. Helping young people understand those risks gives them a stronger foundation for making healthy choices.
Where Coach Kee’s 360 Training Fits In
At Coach Kee’s 360 Training, we work with young people from different backgrounds and abilities, including athletes, non-athletes, neurotypical youth, and neurodivergent youth. We believe that building strength goes beyond physical performance. It also means developing confidence, discipline, self-respect, and the ability to make healthy decisions.
We know that habits develop over time. We also understand how peer pressure, social media, and the desire to fit in can influence young people.
That’s why we believe wellness education belongs alongside physical training. Helping kids build healthy habits, trust their judgment, and feel confident in their decisions is an important part of supporting their overall development.
Our goal is to encourage young people to train their bodies, strengthen their minds, and develop the confidence to stand by their values—even when faced with pressure.

How to Start the Vaping Conversation Without Making It Awkward
You don’t need a perfect speech or a formal sit-down. Sometimes, the most meaningful conversations happen naturally during a car ride, on a walk, or after practice.
Here are six ways to get started.
1. Choose a Relaxed Moment
Look for a time when you and your child can talk without distractions. A casual conversation often feels less intimidating than a serious lecture.
2. Ask Before You Explain
Start with an open-ended question, such as:
“What have you heard about vaping at school or online?”
Give your child time to answer. Listen without immediately correcting them. Understanding what they already know can help you address misinformation and concerns.
3. Share One or Two Simple Facts
Keep the conversation focused. Explain how nicotine can affect the developing brain, how vaping can lead to addiction, and why protecting lung health matters.
You don’t need to cover everything in one conversation. A few clear facts can make a lasting impression.
4. Talk About Marketing and Social Media
When you see a flavored product, an online post, or a vaping-related trend, use it as a learning opportunity.
Ask your child:
“Who do you think this product is trying to appeal to?”
“What makes it look attractive?”
“Does something being popular mean it’s safe?”
These questions encourage critical thinking instead of simply telling kids what to believe.
5. Practice Saying No
Give your child an opportunity to practice responding to peer pressure. Simple phrases can make it easier to respond in the moment:
- “No thanks, I’m good.”
- “That’s not for me.”
- “I’m focused on my health and training.”
- “I’d rather not.”
Remind your child that they don’t owe anyone a long explanation for making a healthy choice.
6. Set Clear Family Expectations—and Keep Talking
Let your child know where your family stands on vaping. Be clear, calm, and consistent.
Most importantly, keep the conversation going. Check in regularly, answer questions, and make it clear that your child can come to you if they feel pressured or make a mistake.
If Your Child Is Already Vaping
Discovering that your child is vaping can be upsetting, but your response can help determine whether they feel comfortable being honest with you.
Begin by asking questions rather than making assumptions. Find out what they are using, how often they vape, and whether they feel they can stop. Listen to understand the situation before deciding on next steps.
If nicotine dependence is involved, professional support can make a difference.
